As an attempt to get back on the blogging bandwagon, the first track in a while…

Today ended up being a Bernstein day, for no particular reason.

Leonard Bernstein / Overture to Candide // Great piece. I must confess, I’ve never listened to the whole operetta, but hopefully I’ll get around to it soon.

Leonard Bernstein / Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront // Not very well known, but a great piece.

Idea / Homeless Cards

Oxford is sometimes a city of huge contrasts, and one example of this exists in the form of the many homeless or very poor people in Oxford, asking for money or selling Big Issues in the city centre right next to colleges with multi-million pound endowments, and libraries containing hundreds of priceless manuscripts. It’s a juxtaposition that I seem to simultaneously find hard to come to terms with and easy to ignore, and I’m sure I’m not the only person to feel that way. I want to help, but I’m not sure I can in any significant way. Not only that, but I often feel unsure about giving cash to homeless people on the streets (again, I don’t think I’m alone in that, although it could be a totally mistaken assumption), and there are sometimes signs in Oxford discussing exactly that issue. Imagine Dragons / Radioactive // This is actually quite catchy

Robert Schumann / Fantasiestücke op. 73 // A great set of pieces for clarinet or cello and piano, not to be confused with the op. 12 pieces for piano by the same composer with the same title.

Four very different songs today…

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys / Empire State of Mind // Couldn’t get the chorus to this song out of my head, no idea why – I hadn’t even listened to it all the way through before. Never mind, it’s not the greatest song in world history, but I thought I’d post it.

Lady Gaga / Bad Romance // Again, this song isn’t the greatest in the world, but it was stuck in my head for no particular reason. Someone did write quite a cool fugue version of it though.

Schubert / Der Atlas & Der Doppelgänger (both from Schwanengesang D. 957) // These songs, on the other hand, really are amazing, although obviously in a very different genre. Also, these are absolutely fantastic performances.

I thought it would be interesting use some of these posts to look at completely different interpretations of the same, or very similar, subjects, so here goes with Dire Straits, Prokofiev, and Tchaikovsky.

Dire Straits / Romeo and Juliet

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky / Romeo and Juliet

Sergei Prokofiev / Romeo and Juliet, op. 64
