Music of the Day / 20

  • Sibelius, Symphony no. 5

  • John Cage, Apartment House 1776 // A very interesting piece based on the music of early American composers. Cage numbered the notes in each piece and then used chance to select which of them would be retained. The gaps between the randomly selected notes were filled by alternating between adding silence and sustaining the previous tone. I think the result is beautiful, in a strange, ethereal way. Cage said ‘the cadences and everything disappeared; but the flavour remained.’

  • John Adams, The Wound-Dresser

  • Cannonball Adderley, Autumn Leaves

  • Vampire Weekend, Oxford Comma
